Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica is one of the most famous coffees in the world. So well-known in fact that many lesser coffee blends have copied its name. But here at Real Deal Roasters we offer only the real thing, the king of premium coffee.
JBM coffee is famous for its mild flavour and complete lack of bitterness. Over the past few decades this coffee has become one of the world’s most expensive and sought-after drinks. 80% of all Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee goes immediately to Japan. However, working with our friends at The Little Coffee Company we have managed to secure a small supply for you to enjoy this Christmas. And its tones of chocolate, spices and nuts are perfect for the season. It’s so lovely we prefer to take it as an espresso or black Americano to really savour its unique taste.
The Blue Mountains
These famous mountains rise in the north-east part of the island of Jamaica. They stand between between the capital, Kingston, to the south and Port Antonio to the north. Rising as high as 2,256 masl (7,402 ft), they are among the highest mountains in the whole Caribbean. The climate is cool and misty with high rainfall. The volcanic soil is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. There is excellent drainage on the steep hillsides. This combination of climate and soil turns out to be ideal for growing coffee.
History of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
It was 1728 when the Governor of the French colony of Martinique, another lush, fertile island some 1200 miles south-west of Jamaica, presented a single Arabica coffee plant to his counterpart, the Governor of Jamaica. The Jamaican coffee industry began and within nine years it had begun exporting. Today, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is a globally famous and protected mark. The Jamaica Commodities Regulatory Authority labels all genuine JBM.
This particular JBM coffee comes from Maveric Farm, located in Westphalia in the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains. Westphalia is about 5,700 feet above sea level. It overlooks Kingston Harbour, Portmore and Port Royal. This area provides habitats for some of the island’s most beautiful endemic fauna and flora as well as the production of JBM coffee. It is a family owned business, managed by one of the matriarchs of the JBM coffee industry. The Little Coffee Company have always supported female-led coffee growing ventures. See our lovely Rwandan coffee for another example. The family’s efforts and dedication, coupled with excellent growth and environmental best practices, result in this most beloved Maveric Farms coffee.
